elon musk

Elon Musk (born June 28, 1971, Pretoria, South Africa) is a South African-born American entrepreneur who cofounded the electronic-payment firm PayPal and formed SpaceX, maker of launch vehicles and spacecraft.  He also served as Tesla's chief executive officer and was one of the company's initial significant investors. In addition, Musk acquired Twitter (later X) in 2022.  Musk leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in U.S.  Pres.  The second administration of Donald Trump. Musk is the world’s richest person, with a net worth of $393 billion, as of 2025.

Early years

Musk was born to a Canadian mother and a South African father. He displayed an early talent for computers and entrepreneurship.  He developed a video game and sold it to a computer magazine when he was 12 years old. In 1988, after obtaining a Canadian passport, Musk left South Africa because he was unwilling to support apartheid through compulsory military service and because he sought the greater economic opportunities available in the United States.

PayPal and SpaceX

Musk received his undergraduate degrees in physics and economics from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1997 after transferring from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, in 1992. He applied to Stanford University in California to attend graduate school in physics, but he dropped out after just two days because he thought the Internet had more potential to change society than physics. He established Zip2, which provided online newspapers with business directories and maps, in 1995. In 1999 Zip2 was bought by the computer manufacturer Compaq for $307 million, and Musk then founded an online financial services company, X.com, which later became PayPal, which specialized in transferring money online.  PayPal was acquired by the online auction site eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion.

Musk had long held the belief that humanity must evolve into a multiplanet species in order for life to continue. However, the high cost of rocket launchers dissatisfied him. To produce rockets at a lower cost, he established Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) in 2002. The Falcon 1 rocket, which was launched for the first time in 2006, and the larger Falcon 9 rocket, which was launched for the first time in 2010, were the company's first two rockets. Both of these rockets were made to be much less expensive than rival rockets. A third rocket, the Falcon Heavy (first launched in 2018), was designed to carry 117,000 pounds (53,000 kg) to orbit, nearly twice as much as its largest competitor, the Boeing Company’s Delta IV Heavy, for one-third the cost.  The Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy eventually dominated the launch vehicle market, and in 2024 more than half of the world’s orbital launches were done by SpaceX.

SpaceX has announced the successor to the Falcon 9 and the Falcon Heavy: the Super Heavy–Starship system.  The Super Heavy first stage would be capable of lifting 100,000 kg (220,000 pounds) to low Earth orbit.  The payload would be the Starship, a spacecraft designed for providing fast transportation between cities on Earth and building bases on the Moon and Mars.

The Dragon spacecraft, which carries supplies to the International Space Station (ISS), was also developed by SpaceX. Dragon can carry as many as seven astronauts, and it had a crewed flight carrying astronauts Doug Hurley and Robert Behnken to the ISS in 2020.  The first test flights of the Super Heavy–Starship system launched in 2020.  In addition to being CEO of SpaceX, Musk was also chief designer for the Dragon, Starship, and Falcon rockets. As part of NASA's Artemis space program,

SpaceX is contracted to construct the lander for the astronauts returning to the Moon by 2026. The Starlink satellite network, which provides Internet service, was also developed by SpaceX. As of 2025 there are about 7,000 working Starlink satellites, accounting for more than half of all active satellites.  Starlink is a megaconstellation, or satellite Internet constellation, with more than three million subscribers as of 2024.

Tesla

Musk had been interested in the potential of electric cars for a long time, and in 2004, he became one of the major investors in Tesla Motors, which was later renamed Tesla. Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, two businessmen, had started the electric car company. The Roadster, Tesla's first vehicle, was released in 2006; it could travel 394 kilometers (245 miles) on a single charge. It was a sports car that could go from 0 to 60 miles (97 kilometers) per hour in less than four seconds, in contrast to the majority of previous electric vehicles, which Musk thought were boring and uninteresting. In 2010 the company’s initial public offering raised about $226 million.  Two years later, Tesla introduced the Model S sedan, which was praised for its performance and design by automotive critics. With the introduction of its Model X luxury SUV in 2015, the business received additional praise. The Model 3, a less-expensive vehicle, went into production in 2017 and became the best-selling electric car of all time.

Tesla announced several models to be released early in the 2020s, including a semitrailer truck (the Tesla Semi) and a pickup truck, the Cybertruck.  Although the Cybertruck was slated for production in 2021, supply chain disruptions, design, and production issues pushed its rollout back two years.  By the time Tesla began making Cybertruck deliveries in late 2023, it boasted a reservation backlog of two million vehicles, despite the boxy angular design that excited controversy when it was first unveiled.

Dissatisfied with the projected cost ($68 billion) of a high-speed rail system in California, Musk in 2013 proposed an alternate faster system, the Hyperloop, a pneumatic tube in which a pod carrying 28 passengers would travel the 350 miles (560 km) between Los Angeles and San Francisco in 35 minutes at a top speed of 760 miles (1,220 km) per hour, nearly the speed of sound.  Musk claimed that the Hyperloop would only cost $6 billion and could accommodate the six million people who travel that route annually with pods departing on average every two minutes. However, he stated, between running SpaceX and Tesla, he could not devote time to the Hyperloop’s development.

X (previously Twitter)

X (formerlyMusk joined the social media service Twitter in 2009, and, as @elonmusk, he became one of the most popular accounts on the site, with more than 85 million followers as of 2022.  He tweeted in August 2018 about taking Tesla private for $420 per share, noting that he had "secured funding," and he expressed reservations about the company's public trading. (The value of $420 was seen as a joking reference to April 20, a day celebrated by devotees of cannabis.)  The following month the U.S.  Musk was sued for securities fraud by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), who claimed that the tweets were "false and misleading." Shortly thereafter Tesla’s board rejected the SEC’s proposed settlement, reportedly because Musk had threatened to resign.  However, a harsher deal was ultimately accepted after the news sent Tesla stock plunging. It stipulated that Musk would be removed from his position as chairman for a period of three years, though he would be permitted to continue as CEO; that Tesla lawyers would have to approve Musk's tweets in advance; and that both Tesla and Musk would be subject to fines of $20 million. Twitter)

Musk was critical of Twitter’s commitment to principles of free speech, in light of the company’s content-moderation policies.  Musk had purchased more than 9% of Twitter in filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) at the beginning of April 2022. Shortly thereafter, Musk made the announcement that he would not be joining Twitter's board of directors. Instead, Musk offered $44 billion for the entire company at a value of $54.20 per share. Twitter’s board accepted the deal, which would make him sole owner of the company.  Musk stated that his plans for the company included “enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans.”  In July 2022 Musk announced that he was withdrawing his bid, stating that Twitter had not provided sufficient information about bot accounts and claiming that the company was in “material breach of multiple provisions” of the purchase agreement.  Bret Taylor, the chair of Twitter’s board of directors, responded by saying that the company was “committed to closing the transaction on the price and terms agreed upon with Mr.  Musk.”  Twitter sued Musk to force him to buy the company.  In September 2022 Twitter’s shareholders voted to accept Musk’s offer.  Facing a legal battle, Musk ultimately proceeded with the deal, and it was completed in October.

Among Musk’s first acts as Twitter’s owner were to lay off about half the company and to allow users to purchase for $8 a month the blue check-mark verification, which had previously been bestowed by Twitter upon notable figures.  In addition, he dissolved the content-moderation body on Twitter and reinstated a number of banned accounts, most notably the account of former US President Donald Trump, which had been suspended following the U.S. Capitol attack on January 6, 2021.  As more businesses removed their advertisements from the platform, advertising revenue decreased significantly. In July 2023, Musk changed the company's name from Twitter to X. (With the change, tweets became posts.)

We asked for your views on Aston Villa's performance against Cardiff City, as Unai Emery's side sealed their spot in the FA Cup quarterfinals.

Aston Villa 2-0 Cardiff City - the fans' verdict

Rob: A solid and professional performance.  There were some hints of fantastic play - Asensio's ball control is just sublime - but, while a strong team was played, we were clearly keeping some energy

back for the Brugge game.  Cardiff's Ethan Horvath had a fantastic night in goal and deservedly won man of the match.  Overall I'm pleased with the result and where we are in the season, especially when I think where Villa were before Emery came in.  Every season is a building block - and there will be peaks and troughs.

Nick: A solid performance.  I'm glad we went strong, as this competition at least provides the opportunity to go to Wembley.  It would be good to give it a real go this season because many of the big clubs are out.

Richard: Glad to get the win and not concede, but we were often too slow in possession when attacking.  Asensio and Rashford seem to be a good partnership.  It's also great that all of the new signings have slotted seamlessly into Emery's style of play.  Hopefully the players aren't too tired for Tuesday's game.

Lee: We did the job eventually.  Rashford just needs a goal now, it will do his confidence the world of good.  You can't fault his assists though, spot on.

Prit: I'm really happy with the win and it is great to see the Rashford-Asensio axis getting stronger each match.  I thought Cardiff's goalkeeper had a great game and I couldn't believe he has only just got into the team.  I'm still concerned about our defence.  We need Torres and Mings back but, above all, we need a fit Kamara anchoring.

Ian: A good all-round showing.  Marco Asensio showing Ollie Watkins how to score goals is a concern.  It was nice to get a clean sheet.  Let's hope this sparks an improvement in form and results.

Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra extended Ramzan wishes to everyone on Saturday night. "Ramzan Mubarak! May this sacred month fill your life with happiness and bring peace to your heart," Rahul Gandhi said in a post on X.

Priyanka Gandhi said on X, "Hearty congratulations to all of you on the holy month of mercy and blessings, Ramadan. I pray to God that this holy month brings happiness, prosperity and peace in the lives of all of you".

Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah held a meeting with officials of the different departments in view of the holy month of Ramzan. During the meeting, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah instructed officials to ensure the proper supply of electricity and other basic services throughout the month.

"The holy month of Ramzan is starting. It is the responsibility of the government to provide facilities to the people. In this connection, a meeting was held today during which a review was taken of every department. Everyone was clearly

instructed that there should be no shortcomings in the supply of electricity, especially during the Sehri (pre-dawn meals) and Iftar (fast-breaking evening meal) timings, water supply, ration, cleanliness, sanitation, and traffic," Mr. Abdullah told reporter here.

The Holy month of Ramzan, a period of 30 days of fasting, starts on March 2. It is followed by Eid-Ul-Fitr, marking the end of the month-long dawn-to-sunset fasting of Ramzan.

What It Means for the Champions Trophy 2025 Semifinal Race: The Afghanistan-Australia Washout

After their Group B match against Afghanistan was washed out in Lahore, Australia qualified for the Champions Trophy 2025 semifinals.

Australia qualified for the Champions Trophy 2025 semifinals after their Group B match against Afghanistan was washed out in Lahore on Friday.

Australia now has four points from three matches, while South Africa and Afghanistan both have three points. However, South Africa will play England in their final Group B match on Saturday, having missed one game. With 5 points, South Africa will join Australia in the semifinals if they win the game.

However, a loss for South Africa against England might open the door for Afghanistan as the second semi-final spot from Group B will then be decided by Net Run Rate (NRR).  South Africa currently holds the advantage due to their significantly higher NRR.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Australia were 109 for 1 in 12.5 overs, chasing a target of 274, when the match was stopped by rain. Several pools of water remained on the field despite the ground staff's efforts to clear it, and after an inspection, the umpires decided to call the match off.

The interruption came just an hour before the cut-off time for completing the match.

With the game called off, Australia advanced to the semifinals with four points.  In Rawalpindi, their last match against South Africa was also abandoned

At the time of interruption, Travis Head was in superb form, having scored 59 runs off 40 balls, including nine fours and one six.

Rashid Khan dropped him on six after diving at mid-on off Fazalhaq Farooqi and dropping him.

Head took advantage of this opportunity to dominate the Afghanistan bowlers, scoring 28 runs off just 17 balls from Farooqi.

At the other end, skipper Steve Smith played a more measured innings, getting 19 not out of 22 balls, including two boundaries.

Afghanistan's chances are slim if this match doesn't go their way, and it would depend on how England and South Africa play on Saturday.

A net run-rate (NRR) calculation will be made if England wins, and South Africa and Afghanistan will both finish with three points.

Unless South Africa loses by more than 200 runs, Afghanistan's current NRR of -0.99 would almost certainly eliminate them.

Sediqullah Atal's tough 85 and Azmatullah Omarzai's explosive 67 helped Afghanistan reach a competitive total earlier in the day of 273.

After a rocky start, Atal anchored the innings, but Omarzai's late fireworks lifted Afghanistan past 270 after they were 235 for 8 after Rashid Khan was out.

Under pressure, Omarzai hit 63 balls with five sixes and one four. In the penultimate over, he hit two huge sixes off Nathan Ellis, including a stunning 102-meter shot over midwicket that went over Glenn Maxwell at the boundary.

He then hit a towering six wide of long-off as Afghanistan scored a total that significantly improved their spin-heavy bowling lineup.

Dominant Delhi Capitals dismantle MI to rise to the top spot

Delhi Capitals climbed to the top of the WPL 2025 standings, swapping places with Mumbai Indians, who they crushed by nine wickets at

the M.  Stadium Chinnaswamy in Bengaluru. The victory, the Capitals' second over the inaugural champions in this season, was set up by an excellent bowling performance led by the experienced Jess Jonassen's sixth three-fer in WPL history.

Before Meg Lanning and Shafali's blistering 85-run opening partnership of Meg Lanning (60* off 49) and Shafali (43 off 28) added a touch of inevitability to the final result, Mumbai Indians were limited to a paltry 123 on a familiarly good batting surface. The Capitals won with 33 balls to spare, giving a significant fillip to their Net Run Rate.

Coming into this top-of-the-table match, the Mumbai Indians were unbeaten at the venue this season, but they had to write success in a different way after being put in the game.

When Yastika Bhatia won the first ball from Marizanne Kapp and hit it for four, the match got off to the best possible start. Without being overly risk-averse, Bhatia and Hayley Matthews helped Mumbai get off to a strong start, with Matthews establishing up to four boundaries.

All of that changed in the final PowerPlay over when Shikha Pandey took her first wicket, knocking out Bhatia, who had only 11 runs out of 35, which turned out to be the team's best total for the first wicket. Mumbai suffered two blows when Matthews was run out by Annabel Sutherland in the very next over.

Harmanpreet Kaur, partnered by Nat Sciver-Brunt, was able to restart Mumbai's innings after opening with a streaky edged four off Titas Sadhu. After that, they scored 18 runs in the 10th over that Sadhu bowled, indicating that they were ready to step it up. When Jonassen resumed the attack at that point, the game completely changed.

Harmanpreet was first dismissed by Jonassen with an arm ball, but the Mumbai Indians captain missed her attempt at a legside nudge. There was no reprieve from DRS.  She bowled a flighted delivery in her third over that dipped on Sciver-Brunt, who chipped it back to the bowler for a straightforward catch. Minnu Mani played an excellent spell,

dismissing S Sajana and Amelia Kerr in a single over, the latter falling to a sensational catch in the deep from Sutherland. The Mumbai Indians were unable to recover from that double setback, and as a result, they were defeated. Mumbai lost 5 for 23 to finish with 123/9.

The total was never going to be enough to test Delhi but the openers produced to wipe out any trace of an asterisk that might have remained at the half-way mark.  Lanning got going with a brace of boundaries in the first over off Shabnim Ismail.

Verma then tore into Sciver-Brunt in the third over, pulling an emphatic six before adding a brace of fours in a 16-run over.  By the end of the PowerPlay, Delhi had 57 on the board with the Lanning-Verma pair registering its 11th 50-run stand (the most).

Verma jumped ahead in the stands and hit two more sixes in a Kerr over before losing to Amanjot Kaur in the tenth over. From thereon, it was a stroll in the park for the Capitals and their captain ensured it remained so by completing her eighth half-century in the tournament and remaining unbeaten while taking the team over the line.

Brief scores: Mumbai Indians lost by nine wickets to Delhi Capitals, 124/1 in 14.3 overs (Meg Lanning 60*, Shafali Verma 43; Amanjot Kaur 1-12) in 20 overs (Harmanpreet Kaur 22; Jess Jonassen 3-25, Minnu Mani 3-17).

australia vs afghanistan

Rain seals Australia's progress, leaves Afghanistan on the brink

After 12.5 overs of Australia's chase, Afghanistan's hopes of 50-over retribution against Australia in an ICC event were dashed by showers. Due to the game's cancellation, Australia is now one of the semifinalists, along with India and New Zealand. Meanwhile, Afghanistan, who have three points to their name, are almost out the door. Only an unlikely miracle in Saturday's match between South Africa and England can keep them in the tournament.

Travis Head raced away to a breezy fifty-five, putting Afghanistan on the ropes before the interventions from above. As Fazalhaq Farooqi struggled to control the swing he generated, he and fellow opener Matthew Short flew out of

the gate, giving up 18 runs in his first over. Azmatullah Omarzai's next ball scored 14, and Farooqi's next ball scored 10 more runs, putting Australia at 42/0 in four overs in pursuit of Afghanistan's 273. Like they had done in that incredible fixture in 2023 ODI World Cup, Afghanistan once again began to fluff their lines on the field as both the openers were dropped once each.

Short offered another chance in the same over that Gulbadin Naib latched onto at mid-on.  Steve Smith arrived and disdainfully sent his first two deliveries for fours - through cover and mid-wicket to bring up the team's fifty in just the fifth over to put his side well ahead of the eight-ball in the chase.  As he continued to punish Omarzai with three consecutive fours in the ninth over, Afghanistan continued to face the consequences of dropping Head. In ten overs, Australia reached 90/1, the tournament's highest PowerPlay total.

Afghanistan paid the price for also trying to go short in this period - conceding 48 off 21 such balls.  The showers arrived shortly after Australia reached 100 and ended the fixture. The venue was inspected by the umpires after more than an hour of waiting, and one

supersopper went around trying to dry out the outfield's numerous puddles of water. Soon after, the umpires decided that there could be no more play. Since Australia's innings did not hit the 20-over mark (109/1 in 12.5 overs), DLS method could not come in, leading to the abandonment of the fixture.

Before Afghanistan were hit with this disappointing conclusion, they showed the fight and bite that helped them down England just two nights ago to remain in the race for a semifinal spot.  Throughout their batting innings against Australia, they repeatedly showed their ability to go toe to toe with a stronger side and the strength to keep bouncing back from tricky situations.

Sediqullah Atal, Afghanistan's top scorer for the day with an 85 off 95 balls, led Afghanistan through the first ten overs with the impressive Ibrahim Zadran, but Australia successfully fought back with spin in the middle ten overs. In overs 11 to 20, Afghanistan lost Zadran, Rahmat Shah, and control, but Atal and Hashmatullah Shahidi picked up the pieces

and put the game back together in the next ten overs. Atal's wicket in the 32nd over brought another period of instability as Afghanistan slid to 199/7 in the 40th over, but were once again found an able resurrector in Azmatullah Omarzai, who scored 67 off 63 to push the team to 273.  Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi had hoped the surface would get slower in the second half and suit his spinners but rain ensured the game never got that far.

Brief Scores: Afghanistan 273 in 50 overs (Sediqullah Atal 85, Azmatullah Omarzai 67; Ben Dwarshuis 3-47, Adam Zampa 2-48, Spencer Johnson 2-49) vs Australia 109/1 in 12.5 overs (Travis Head 59*).  Match Abandoned due to rain.

Milan are performing a few tactical experiments in training ahead of tomorrow’s rescheduled Serie A trip to Bologna, including the so-called Fantastic Four.

The Week 9 fixture was originally planned for October but called off due to flood warnings in the area around the Studio Dallara.

It will instead kick off on Thursday at 19.45 GMT and finds both teams currently tied together on 41 points in seventh and eighth place.

Milan go into the match without injured Kyle Walker, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Emerson Royal and Alessandro Florenzi.

However, Florenzi was spotted on the team bus making the trip to Bologna, so he wanted to be close to the squad anyway.

Today in practice, coach Sergio Conceicao tried a few different things, including the "Fantastic Four"—Christian Pulisic, Santiago Gimenez, Rafael Leao, and Joao Felix—along with each other.

Other options had Yunus Musah in for Joao Felix instead, moving Tijjani Reijnders into the trequartista role rather than the midfield two.

Youssouf Fofana is widely expected to start after two consecutive games on the bench.

Before this weekend's Serie A matchup with Lazio, Riccardo Sottil is also vying for the left flank, where he would send Rafael Leao to the bench.

As for Bologna, they seem ready to start former Rossoneri captain Davide Calabria against the team he left in the January transfer window.

Riccardo Orsolini is the favourite rather than Benjamin Dominguez to play with another ex-Milan man, Tommaso Pobega, and Dan Ndoye in support of Santiago Castro.
